It's easy to get a "flat" scan in Silverfast. Both these features ensures that I easily get great colors in my scans. I also use Auto-IT8 color profiling in Silverfast as the scanner included an IT8 target. NegaFix works a lot better for me than ColorPerfect in Photoshop. What I truly enjoy is the film profiles (NegaFix) in Silverfast which saves me a loooot of time. I actually prefer the way Silverfast works. But judging by the deathly quiet across the internet (and even relatively speaking in this thread) I may be the only person who's ever considered leaving Vuescan and crossing the barricades to join the opposition. Is Silverfast the Quark of scanning software? Trying desperately to hang on by selling at inflated prices to a few corporate customers who haven't bothered to do a cost analysis of the alternatives? There are virtually no blogs with helpful tips from professionals or enthusiasts using the software, and on Flickr what appears to be the 'official' Silverfast 8 group has one question (posted 2 years ago) with zero answers! I actually wonder who is using the Silverfast? There are so few recent hits on Google, and those that exist are often of the "I hate Silverfast"-variety. Nothing earth-shattering, and vastly overkill for my snapshots, but frustrating to know that such good results are wrapped in such a wretched application run by what appears to be a rather predatory company. There must be someone who has a good word for the software?Īnyway I was doing some more quick tests when I got back from work tonight, and indeed there is a touch more detail visible in the scans than I could get from Vuescan. Categories: photography.Sad not to get any input from people using Silverfast and satisfied with it.

And the black and white point settings are relative (percent of image frame) and not absolute, which adds a degree of variation from frame to frame.Įven so, there is less unpredictable magic here which makes it much easier to get reasonably consistent scans. There is no way of saving white balance presets. Vuescan only has two slight drawbacks in my opinion. In general it offers more control and less guessing. Vuescan can also name your output files automatically in a numbered series, for instance from 01 to 36. The crop tool is nice and easy to use, and allows you to tilt the frame slightly if necessary. Just like SilverFast, Vuescan has colour profiles for a load of different negative films. Vuescan gives me much better control over image quality, even if it isn’t perfect either. Somehow, though, I found out that the 32-bit version might work, so I gave it a try. I already had the 64-bit version of Vuescan installed to drive my old flatbed scanner, and I had tried to use it with the CrystalScan 7200. How about using a thin dashed line so I can see what I’m actually doing? It is slow too and changes thickness when you’re dragging it, so it involves much guesswork. It uses a thick (2 pixels) red border to show the cropped area. One other thing that annoyed me no end was the crop tool. Then there’s the CCR (Colour Cast Removal) checkbox in the Negafix dialog (above) and a Colour Cast Removal slider in the levels dialog (right). So if you check it and then decide you don’t want the effect it won’t help to uncheck it. It turns out the Auto Mask checkbox is non-reversible. For instance, what does the Auto Mask checkbox do? What does Auto Mask even mean? And how does it interact with the film profiles?Īll the help pages on the web are completely outdated and only deal with old versions of SilverFast where the controls were different.

The documentation for this software is also severely lacking. And whatever it does, it does it inconsistently. Even though I’ve been working with photos digitally for at least a decade I simply cant describe in words what this slider actually does. The main culprit is the Auto Tolerance slider (left).

Pull one slider and you might find it has affected some setting somewhere else.Īll in all it is very hard to get consistent results from frame to frame. They do interact though, there’s no question about it. It is far from obvious what they do and how they interact with each other.

?įrom day one the sliders in SilverFast have driven me half crazy. This made me realize I haven’t blogged about my scanning progress for quite a while, or the fact that I have abandoned the bundled software SilverFast and gone with Vuescan instead.īy now I’ve scanned about 50 rolls of film, or close to 1,400 photos. I got an e-mail the other day asking what I thought about my negative scanner, the Reflecta Crystalscan 7200. Monday, April 4th 2011 Why I switched SilverFast for Vuescan
